We use mostly natural dyes in our studio. Our preference is for plant-based dyes — flowers, berries, leaves and bark from varying plant varieties within our local region. Indigo, Eucalyptus, Turmeric, Juniper, Black Beans, Fustic, Rosehip, Onion Skins and Red Cabbage are amongst our most-used dyes.
Shibori describes a traditional tie-dyeing technique used in Japan which dates back to the 8th century. Shibori involves a range of folding, stitching, binding, twisting and compressing of cloth to result in varying resist patterns.
Traditionally, indigo has been used for this technique - a plant-based dye which is extracted from the indigofera plant. The leaves have been used around the world for centuries in order to dye fibres a range of rich, deep blues.
